some are filled with sand or another type of filler. Sometimes their cheaper and esp considering you dont need a lot of weight for dumbells when ur workout takes place at home, its the ideal type. he probably bought these used (unless he says otherwise) like my friend.. n ur question scared me at first.. had to do a double take lmao
